Puma Drift Cat 3's !

WARNING! Tthis post has nothing to do with members of the feline family doing an Initial D in a Toyota AE86!  If you were expecting something like this - please move on or go read about my See Yau Kai post.

Recently I treated myself to a new pair of driving shoes.

Huh???? Driving shoes?? Got such thing meh .. well apparently there is.  Here's what WIKI says (and you know what they say lah - if it's in WIKI it has to be TRUE!)

" Driver shoes as the name suggests, are best worn when you are driving especially over long distances. They are commonly lace-free slip-ons (may have ornamental laces that do not necessarily help in fastening or tightening the grip of the shoes) are made of super comfortable, 'breathable' materials like leather, suede, cloth etc., are super flexible and are designed to wick away moisture from your skin.

Unlike conventional shoes, these have soles that extend beyond the base of the heel and extend along to the middle or top of the back side of the shoe in order to protect and cushion the angled heel that touches the floor of the car. As the foot is angled upwards while placed on an accelerator or other foot pedals of a car, the extended, overlapping sole provides a more comfortable support for the heel and keeps the foot from getting sore even after hours of driving. "

Heck - dunno lah - I guess all of the above and if you join a bunch of motor heads for a drive - you'd want one because everyone else is usually wearing one lol (and they are probably wearing one because you are?).

I got myself a pair of Puma Drift Cat 3's from the Puma shop at BV2 (who incidentally were having them on sale - 40% off!) so I can slowly retire my other pair of Puma's (shocking red - dunno what model) that hurt my feet after a long drive (seems to be totally against the point of having a driving shoe!).

The packaging - "The clever little bag"

The goods - "So which one of these do you think can be classified as a 'driving shoe' ? "

The correct answer should be 3 & 4.  Here's a closer look :

I plan to eventually retire the red pair if the black one is more comfy.  I had no issues with the red pair except it hurt after long journeys - the pedal feel is good and although it's laced - I had no problems with that.

My new Drift Cat 3 (black coror) SHOULD be more awesome (albeit less shocking - coror wise!) because outright they feel more comfortable.  Expect a more thorough review after my drive to Taiping this coming weekend.  If anyone's interested :

Here's what Amazon says about the Drift Cat Tiga
  • The 2012 Ferrari version of Drift Cat III CF with its velcro fastening system, creates a simple, fashionable and fast low-profile lifestyle shoe.
  • The trainer features the ferrari shield on the side to the back, the italian flag on the back of the heel and the puma cat logo on the back of the heel and also the sole.
  • This product comes in a "CLEVER LITTLE BAG" Well it's smarter than an old fashioned shoebox because it uses 65% less paper. Even better, it means you don't need an extra carrier bag and you can use it over and over again.
  • A high quality item
  • Part of the official Ferrari Range
The insoles of the Drift Kuching 3 are "Ecoortholite" insoles and apparently provide "unparalleled benefits of OrthoLite performance, including breathability, moisture control, anti-microbial properties, and long term cushioning" - Read more about this here.

What has always puzzled me is why there seem to be so little 'mainstream' driving shoe manufacturers and why Ferrari would partner with a 'not-so-famous' shoe manufacturer like PUMA (read more here) - instead of Reebok / Nike / er .. New Balance? :P ....

Verdict : Dunno yet - but it feels more comfortable and it's priced right when it's discounted 40% (around RM 200 after discount)

Update : 3 March 2013
I have worn this for about 3 drives now :
1) 6 hour trip to Penang (includes driving time and walking around) - 5/10 (I think I really need to consider getting driving shoes 1 size bigger than what I think I should get! It hurt after a few hours)
2) 6 hour trip to Taiping - 5/10 (see comment above)
3) 3 hour trip to Gohtong Jaya - 7/10 (sweet spot for this shoe seems to be about 3 hours - anymore than that and the feet begin hurting).

However - this could just be a size thing - I will likely get a pair of 11's to see if they are any better LONG DISTANCE.

Btw - if money is no object then I'd love to get a pair from this place : http://www.carshoe.com . They have a shop in ION Orchard, Singapore!
